Rock vs Hair

I was reminded recently of an e conversation with a friend about the relationship between hair and rock - does Eddie Vedder or Dave Grohl rock harder when their coif is manicured towards the neat or towards the messy.

Ben's response was "Like Eddie Vedder I believe David Grohl does his best work with stupid long hair. With the good dirty length of his hair now we should expect good things from the coming album"

As you can tell, the conversation was before the release of Foo Fighters' Echoes Silence Patience and Grace album. And yes, the album is ok. But it doesn't rock like it could or should have.

Here is my reply to Ben - again, pre the release of ESPG;

"I associate Shaggy Hair Dave with Uncomfortable Unsure Of Himself Dave.

Uncomfortable Unsure Of Himself Dave got my attention, then along came Funny Talkative Motherfucker Dave (with the summers ultimate fashion accessory - Blonde Hair Surfer Boy Tay).

Funny Talkative Motherfucker Dave still had elements of Uncomfortable Unsure Of Himself Dave but now he was comfortable on stage and in interviews. And he got more successful. And that is nice. Lets call him Comfortable Dave.

Comfortable Dave then got a little unsure of what to do next, so he went and played some RAWK with the Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, Marijuana, Ecstasy and Alcohol marching band.
The Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, Marijuana, Ecstasy and Alcohol marching band reminded Comfortable Dave of the Shaggy Dave (i think KG and JB had something to do with it as well) and then this New Improved Dave came back with a force that took even the most avid fans by surprise - Confident Ladies Man Who Still Rocks Like A Shaggy Motherfucker Dave.

Confident Ladies Man Who Still Rocks Like A Shaggy Motherfucker Dave then hung out with the cute as can be Petra (oh Petra you so fine, you so fine you blow my.... mind. Hey Petra) and brought back his original Shaggy Dave sidekick Pat and the other merry bunch of Foo and they toured the worlds Opera Houses and historic venues while still maintaining the rock and the roll while also inspiring us to new wuthering heights with the hyperbalic ballads and all round niceness. And thank fuck they didnt play Learn To Fly."

So there you have it. Id like to hear from the 5 of you (Brian has joined The Audio Project readers list - yay!) what you think about haircuts and rock - is there a relationship between a lame haircut and a lame album?

Some examples of Mr Grohl are below. I took these photos at the Metro show here in Sydney June 1 2005 when Foo were here for the promo tour prior to the release of In Your Honor. Dave has partly shaggy hair. And the album partly rocks.

And heres a few photos I took during the Foo show at HMV in Pitt St Sydney when they were here for the Big Day Out in January 2000. A great time in my life. The band were promoting There Is Nothing Left To Lose. Dave has no shaggy hair. And the album rocks. Hmmmmmm.....

In summary, both Dave and Eddie currently have shaggy hair. Only one of them has put out a recent album that truly rocks.
